You’ve got to feel for the Algerians. They lost to Austria but beat Chile and West Germany. The latter win being the absolute pinnacle of their football achievments at this point. In their first ever World Cup. After Algeria beat Chile the day before, the German speakers knew that if West Germany beat Austria by one or two goals, both teams would progress at the expense of Algeria. So Austria conceded in the tenth minute and the teams did nothing for the rest of the match. Classy.
