USA 2 – 1 Colombia

To put it extremely mildly – poor Andrés Escobar. Murdered a mere five days after the elimination of the Colombian team from the World Cup, reportedly for the crime of the own goal in this match. Obviously a massively senseless waste in its own right, but also hugely preposterous considering the context of the competition. Yes, their squad contained well known names such as Carlos Valderrama, Freddy Rincón and Tino Asprilla, but did the Colombian fans think they were going to win the World Cup?! Had they progressed from their group in place of either Romania, Switzerland or the US, they would’ve been facing one of Argentina, Brazil or Spain. A hugely heavy price to pay for probably one extra game in a tournament. Awful.
