You’ve got to love the Africans turning up to spoil the party, haven’t you? Along with Cameroon in 1990, this is up there with the biggest and best. However, whereas Argentina would go on to reach the final in that tournament, the same can’t be said for the French in 2002. Zinedine Zidane wasn’t fully fit, but the whole squad was jam packed full of World and European Champions, containing the leading goalscorers of the English (Thierry Henry), Italian (David Trezeguet) and French (Djibril Cissé) leagues. Over the course of three group matches, they couldn’t muster up a single goal. Sometimes it just doesn’t make sense.
