Turkey 3 – 1 Georgia

A couple of things that can’t possibly come across in this write up: 1. The loudness of the Turkish support. 2. How good Georgia really were. Given it was their first ever appearance at a major finals, they brought the game to the Turks: they hit the woodwork twice and very nearly equalised in the last minute. Indeed, Turkey’s third goal was only really scored because Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili was up for a corner after Samet Akaydin’s nigh on impossible headed goal line clearance. That said, Turkey scored a couple of Goal of the Tournament contenders via Mert Müldür and teenage sensation Arda Güler and hit the post themselves. Frantic, end to end and spectacular entertainment.
